Well Visits and Annual Physicals Q&A

What is a well-child visit?

Well-child visits are visits starting at birth at regular intervals, as prescribed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). These appointments include a whole-body exam that focuses on weight, length/height, and head circumference measurements, nutrition and child development. It is a pivotal part of your child's healthcare routine in the first three years of life.

Routine vaccinations begin at birth and are administered at regular intervals in accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, New York Department of Health, New York State Board of Education, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

If you’re not comfortable with the routine vaccination schedule, Dr. Ha provides personal counseling along with a modified schedule that still gets your child fully vaccinated for daycare by the age of 3.

At what intervals are the well-child visits scheduled?

Well-child visits are scheduled as follows:

  • 1 month
  • 2 month
  • 4 month
  • 6 month
  • 9 month
  • 12 month
  • 15 month
  • 18 month
  • 24 month
  • 30 month
  • 36 month

What is an annual physical?

Annual physicals are yearly exams that include sports physicals and school physicals. These appointments include a whole-body exam that focuses on both physical and mental wellness, so they’re a crucial part of your child’s health care routine.

Because your child changes so much as they grow, annual physicals are crucial for tracking changes, recognizing possible problems early, and preventing chronic health issues.

What happens during an annual physical?

During an annual physical, Dr. Ha reviews your child’s nutrition and growth since the last visit, their personal medical history, and your family medical history.

She examines personal growth, physical development, and personal wellbeing to make sure your child gets everything they need to be their healthiest. Dr. Ha performs age-appropriate screenings to check for possible chronic health problems as well.

Generally, the physical exam includes:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Blood Pressure
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Heart
  • Lungs
  • Abdomen
  • Eye health
  • Vision
  • Ear health
  • Hearing: Welch Allyn audiometry screening
  • Nose
  • Throat
  • Skin
  • Flexibility
  • Reflexes
  • Sexual maturity staging

If Dr. Ha finds health problems or recognizes potential issues, she provides anticipatory guidance and personal counseling to help your child avoid illness and long-term health problems.

Palisades Pediatrics promotes a relaxed atmosphere in which both you and your child feel comfortable discussing health needs, goals, and ask questions.

Dr. Ha will review routine vaccinations or other routine care at your child’s annual physical. As with all of the other care at the practice, vaccinations schedules are thoroughly discussed.

How can I prepare my child for their annual physical?

Explain to your child that their physical exam won’t be scary or painful. During the simple checkup, they talk to Dr. Ha about their life and health. Be sure to mention that a physical exam is a great time to ask questions and get advice from a medical expert.

Because of the practice’s comfortable, relaxed environment, most children find that visits with Dr. Ha aren’t stressful experiences, and they can feel comfortable talking about even delicate topics like sexuality and mental health.

Palisades Pediatrics personalizes optimal wellness plans for every child who comes through their doors. For the compassionate, supportive annual physical your child deserves, call the office or request an appointment online anytime.
